Natural wedding photography in the Lake District

The Lake District is without question one of the most stunning places in the UK to get married. Lakes, fells, ancient woodlands, and historic country houses — all within an hour's drive of one another. As a wedding photographer based in Carlisle, on the northern edge of the Lake District, I have spent years photographing weddings across this landscape, and it still takes my breath away.

My approach is natural and documentary-led. I capture the day as it unfolds — the glances, the laughter, the tears — with gently posed portraits that feel authentic, never stiff. The landscape is a bonus: a backdrop that elevates every photograph into something extraordinary.

Why choose a local Lake District wedding photographer

There is a practical advantage to hiring someone who lives and works in the Lake District. I know the roads, the light, and the weather patterns. I know which venues face west for golden hour portraits, which have covered entrances for wet-weather group shots, and which locations are a five-minute drive from the reception for a quick portrait session between courses.

I have photographed weddings at Armathwaite Hall on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, at Rose Castle in Dalston, at Kinmount House just over the border in Scotland, and at Newton Hall on the Northumberland coast. Every venue is different, and knowing them well means I can make the most of each one.

What is included in my Lake District wedding photography

Every collection I offer includes unlimited coverage — I am with you from getting ready to the first dance and beyond, up to 10pm. There is no clock-watching, no rushing, and no extra hourly charges. You also receive:

  • Drone aerial images of the venue, grounds, and wedding party
  • A password-protected online gallery for friends and family
  • Social-media-ready images downloadable from your gallery
  • A pre-wedding consultation via Zoom or MS Teams
  • A sneak peek of images in the days following the wedding

The Premium Collection adds a handcrafted album, parent mini albums, a second photographer, and framed wall art. The Ultimate Collection includes everything plus twilight shots with off-camera lighting, a signature frame for guest messages, and ultra-high-resolution images.

The best Lake District wedding venues for photography

The Lake District has no shortage of breathtaking venues. Some of my favourites for photography include:

  • Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa — an award-winning lakeside resort on Windermere with panoramic lake views and a four-star spa.
  • Inn on the Lake — a stunning lakeside hotel on Ullswater with 26 acres of gardens and a private jetty.
  • Askham Hall — a 14th-century country house near Penrith with a Michelin-starred restaurant and bohemian charm.
  • Rose Castle — a genuine medieval castle in Dalston with gardens, a chapel, and a Great Hall.
  • Armathwaite Hall — a country house hotel on Bassenthwaite Lake with stunning lakefront light and historic interiors.
  • Inn on the Lake — a stunning lakeside hotel on Ullswater with 26 acres of gardens and a private jetty.

Other standout venues across Cumbria, Northumberland & South-West Scotland

Beyond the Lake District itself, the wider region is rich with upmarket and castle venues that offer something truly special for a wedding day. I have photographed at many of these, and each brings its own character and photographic opportunities.

Cumbria

  • Dalston Hall — a charming country house near Carlisle with a Great Hall, orangery, and marquee. Perfect for couples seeking a relaxed yet sophisticated celebration with historic character.
  • The Country House, Brampton — a warm and welcoming venue in the north of Cumbria, ideal for intimate weddings surrounded by countryside.
  • Naworth Castle — a magnificent fortified castle near Brampton with centuries of history, a walled garden, and stunning reception rooms. One of Cumbria's most exclusive and atmospheric wedding venues.
  • Scaleby Castle — a privately owned medieval castle near Carlisle, offering a truly unique and secluded setting for a wedding that feels like stepping back in time.

Northumberland

  • Newton Hall — an 18th-century Georgian mansion in Newton-by-the-Sea with the beach just a short walk away. Golden hour portraits on the Northumberland coast are simply spectacular.
  • Doxford Hall — a Georgian country house hotel near Alnwick with beautifully manicured gardens and an elegant orangery. A refined and relaxed setting for a Northumberland wedding.
  • Eshott Hall — a historic country house near Morpeth with Italianate gardens, a grand staircase, and luxurious interiors. A venue that combines grandeur with warmth.
  • Lemmington Hall — a stunning Grade II* listed Georgian mansion set in extensive grounds near Alnwick. Secluded, elegant, and perfect for couples who want privacy and beauty in equal measure.
  • Bamburgh Castle — one of the most iconic castles in England, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Northumberland coast. A wedding here is nothing short of epic — the castle and the beach together create a backdrop that is impossible to replicate.

South-West Scotland

  • Kinmount House — a magnificent 19th-century mansion near Annan in Dumfries & Galloway. Expansive gardens, grand architecture, and a particularly popular choice for multi-day Asian wedding celebrations.
  • Logan House — a handsome country house in the Scottish Borders with beautiful gardens and woodland walks. A romantic and secluded venue for an intimate Scottish wedding.
  • Castlemilk House — a historic estate near Lockerbie offering grand interiors and extensive grounds. A venue with real Scottish character and charm.
  • Lochside House — a boutique hotel on the shores of Loch Ken in Galloway, offering lakeside ceremonies and breathtaking views across the water to the surrounding hills.

Lake District wedding photography — what to expect

On the day, I arrive early to scout the venue and capture getting-ready shots. I work unobtrusively throughout the ceremony, then coordinate the group photographs using the group photo list we agreed in advance. After the formals, I step back and let the day unfold — the documentary work is where the magic happens.

Around golden hour — the last hour before sunset — I will whisk you away for a short portrait session. This is when the Lake District truly shines: warm, directional light raking across the fells, soft reflections on the water, and a sky that can turn from gold to pink to violet in minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Lake District wedding photographer cost?+
My wedding photography collections start from £1,500 for unlimited coverage up to 10pm with digital images, drone aerials, and a USB presentation box. The Premium Collection at £2,000 adds a handcrafted album and second photographer, while the Ultimate Collection at £2,500 includes twilight shots, a signature frame, and parent mini albums.
How far in advance should I book a Lake District wedding photographer?+
I recommend booking 12–18 months in advance for peak summer dates (June–September). Lake District venues are in high demand and the best photographers get booked early. For off-peak dates (November–March), 6–9 months is usually sufficient.
Do you cover weddings outside the Lake District?+
Yes. I am based in Carlisle and cover the entire Lake District, Cumbria, Northumberland, and South-West Scotland. Travel within Cumbria is included; venues further afield may incur a small travel fee.
What happens if it rains on our Lake District wedding day?+
Lake District weather is famously changeable, but rain creates some of the most atmospheric photographs. I always scout indoor backup locations at your venue and build flexibility into the timeline. Some of my favourite images have been taken in moody, overcast conditions.
