The Lake District is a wedding photographer's dream
I have lived in the Lake District for many years and photographed weddings at venues across Cumbria, Northumberland, and South-West Scotland. The scenery here is without parallel — lakes, fells, historic houses, and dramatic coastlines all within an hour's drive of one another.
But choosing a venue is about more than the view. Light shifts throughout the day, weather is unpredictable, and some venues offer richer photographic opportunities than others. Here is my photographer's guide to the venues I know best.
Armathwaite Hall — Bassenthwaite Lake
Armathwaite Hall sits on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, and the setting is truly breathtaking. A country house hotel and spa with a history stretching back to the 11th century — William Wordsworth himself wrote poems about it. For photographs, the lake provides soft, reflected light in the morning and dramatic skies at dusk. The gardens are ideal for group shots, while the interior offers grand fireplaces and elegant rooms for getting-ready portraits.**Best light:** Late afternoon by the lake. **Wet weather plan:** The grand interior rooms and covered entrance.
Newton Hall — Northumberland coast
Newton Hall in Newton-by-the-Sea is an 18th-century Georgian mansion with a singular advantage: the beach is just a short walk away. The golden sands and North Sea views make for some of the most striking wedding portraits in the region. I always plan a beach session around golden hour — the final hour before sunset, when the light is warm and directional.**Best light:** Golden hour on the beach. **Wet weather plan:** The landscaped gardens and elegant interior.
Rose Castle — Dalston, Cumbria
Rose Castle is a genuine medieval castle with a recorded wedding history stretching back to 1425. The castle chapel, Great Hall, and gardens each offer distinct photographic settings. The stonework creates beautiful natural frames for portraits, and the gardens are at their finest in late summer. For drone aerial shots — included in most of my packages — the castle and grounds look nothing short of spectacular from above.**Best light:** Mid-afternoon in the gardens. **Wet weather plan:** The Great Hall and chapel.
Kinmount House — Annan, South-West Scotland
Kinmount House is a 19th-century mansion near Annan in Dumfries and Galloway. The estate is both secluded and expansive — beautiful gardens, woodlands, and grand architecture in equal measure. It is a particularly popular choice for multi-day Asian wedding celebrations, where the flexible spaces accommodate large gatherings with ease. The mansion facade is one of the finest backdrops for the big group shot — see my essential group photo list for how to keep that organised.**Best light:** Late afternoon by the mansion facade. **Wet weather plan:** The elegant interior and covered entrance.
Dalston Hall — Dalston, Carlisle
Dalston Hall is a charming country house featuring a Great Hall, gardens, orangery, and marquee options. It is perfect for couples seeking a relaxed yet sophisticated celebration. The combination of historic character and modern amenities creates a versatile backdrop for documentary-style wedding photography.**Best light:** Afternoon in the gardens. **Wet weather plan:** The Great Hall and orangery.
Weather and timelines
Lake District weather is famously changeable. I always build flexibility into the timeline — if it is raining during the planned portrait session, we move indoors and try again later. Drone images are weather-dependent, so I schedule those for the clearest window. The key is not to panic: some of the finest wedding photographs happen in unexpected weather.

Choosing the right package for your venue
Every venue has different photographic needs. A lakeside venue like Armathwaite Hall benefits from twilight shots — included in the Ultimate Collection. A castle like Rose Castle looks magnificent from the air, making drone coverage essential. And for venues where you want two photographers covering different rooms simultaneously, the Premium and Ultimate collections include a second photographer as standard.
