How To Choose a Wedding Photographer

How to choose a wedding photographer in the Lake District, Cumbria, and Northumberland — the questions to ask, what to look for in a full gallery, and why the right choice matters more than almost anything else on your day.

How To Choose a Wedding Photographer

The most important decision you will make

Your wedding photographs are the one thing you keep after the day itself. The flowers fade, the cake is eaten, the decorations come down — but your album is what you will pick up in ten, twenty, fifty years to relive it all. Choosing the right photographer matters more than almost anything else.

I have been a wedding photographer in the Lake District for many years. Here is what I tell couples who are making this decision.

1. Look at full wedding galleries, not just highlights

Anyone can capture ten great photographs at a wedding. The question is whether they can capture five hundred. Ask to see a complete gallery from a single wedding — the getting ready, the ceremony, the formals, the reception, the dancing. That tells you whether the quality is consistent or merely occasionally lucky.

My wedding gallery showcases a selection of my work, and I am always happy to share full galleries from recent weddings on request.

2. Match the style to what you want

There are two broad approaches: posed and documentary. Posed photography is directed — the photographer tells you where to stand and how to hold one another. Documentary photography is observational — the photographer captures moments as they unfold, without interrupting.

My style is natural and gently posed. I guide couples into positions that flatter, then let the moment breathe. The result is images that feel authentic, never stiff. If that resonates with you, we will work well together.

3. Meet them (or at least video call)

Your photographer is with you from getting ready to the first dance — the person you spend more time with than any other guest on your wedding day. You need to feel comfortable in their company. Every collection I offer includes a pre-wedding consultation via Zoom or MS Teams, so we can talk through your plans and you can get a sense of whether we click.

4. Understand what is included

Read the fine print. How many hours of coverage are included? Is a second photographer part of the package? What about drone aerials? Do you receive an album, or just digital files? How many images will you receive, and when?

My packages range from the Digital Only Collection at £1,500 — which includes unlimited coverage up to 10pm, a USB presentation box, drone aerials, and social-media-ready images — to the Ultimate Collection at £2,500, which adds the Superiore lay-flat album, parent mini albums, twilight shots, a signature frame, and a second photographer. Compare what each collection includes before making your decision.

5. Check they know your venue

A photographer who has worked your venue before knows the best spots for light, where to stage group shots, and what to do if it rains. I have photographed at venues across the region — read my photographer's guide to Lake District and Cumbria wedding venues for my take on each one.

6. Ask about the album

Digital files are wonderful, but an album is what turns photographs into an heirloom. Read my guide to where to print your digital wedding photos to understand why professional printing and handcrafted albums matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for when choosing a wedding photographer?+
Look at full wedding galleries (not just highlights), ensure their style matches what you want, meet them in person or via video call, understand exactly what is included in their package, check they know your venue, and ask about albums and printing.
How far in advance should I book my wedding photographer?+
I recommend booking 12–18 months in advance for peak summer dates. The best photographers get booked early, especially for popular Lake District venues. For off-peak dates, 6–9 months is usually sufficient.
What questions should I ask a wedding photographer before booking?+
Ask to see a full gallery from a single wedding, ask what happens if it rains, ask about their backup equipment, ask when you will receive your images, and ask whether they include a pre-wedding consultation.
