Why drone aerial photography matters
Some photographs can only be taken from above. The full sweep of a venue's grounds, the wedding party arranged in a heart shape on the lawn, the couple standing alone in a landscape that stretches to the horizon — these are images that ground-level photography simply cannot capture.
Drone aerial photography is included in every wedding photography package I offer. There is no extra charge — it is part of how I photograph weddings. The Lake District, with its lakes, fells, and grand country houses, is one of the most spectacular places in the UK for aerial wedding photography.
What drone images I capture at your wedding
- The venue and grounds. A wide aerial shot of the venue in its landscape — the house, the gardens, the surrounding countryside. This is the image that shows the full scale and beauty of your chosen venue.
- The wedding party. The full wedding party arranged in the grounds — a group shot from above that captures everyone in one frame, with the venue and landscape as a backdrop.
- The couple. An aerial portrait of just the two of you, standing in the landscape. This is one of the most dramatic and unique images in any wedding album.
- The arrival. For Asian weddings, drone coverage of the baraat — the groom's arrival procession — is simply spectacular. The scale, the colour, and the energy from above is breathtaking.
Safety and regulations
I am a qualified and fully insured drone operator. I operate within all CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) regulations:
- I fly below 120 metres (400 feet).
- I maintain visual line of sight at all times.
- I do not fly over people who are not under my control.
- I check for airspace restrictions before every flight.
- I do not fly in heavy rain, strong winds, or poor visibility.
I always check with your venue in advance to obtain permission and identify any local restrictions. Some venues — particularly those near airports or military airspace — may have limitations, and I will discuss these with you before the wedding.
The best Lake District venues for drone photography
The Lake District and Cumbria have some of the most spectacular venues for aerial photography:
- Rose Castle — the castle and its gardens look magnificent from above. The medieval stonework set in the Cumbrian countryside is a breathtaking aerial composition.
- Armathwaite Hall — the lakeside setting is spectacular from the air. The house, the lake, and the fells beyond create a layered landscape that is simply stunning.
- Kinmount House — the expansive grounds and grand facade are perfect for aerial shots. The scale of the estate is best appreciated from above.
Weather and timing
Drone flights are weather-dependent. I cannot fly in heavy rain, strong winds, or fog. I always build flexibility into the timeline and schedule drone shots for the clearest window during the day.
The best light for drone photography is mid-morning or mid-afternoon, when the sun is not directly overhead. This creates shadows and texture in the landscape that give the images depth and dimension.
