Eloping in the Lake District
There is something profoundly romantic about eloping in the Lake District. No guest lists, no seating plans, no stress — just the two of you, the landscape, and the promise you make to each other. The fells, the lakes, and the light create a setting that feels timeless and intimate in a way that no hotel ballroom ever can.
As a Lake District elopement photographer, I have seen firsthand how powerful these small, personal ceremonies can be. Without the pressure of performing for a hundred guests, couples relax completely — and the photographs capture a genuineness that is sometimes lost in larger celebrations.
The best locations for a Lake District elopement
Grasmere
Grasmere is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District, and the surrounding village is charming and intimate. Tweedies Grasmere is a wonderful venue for a small celebration, and the lake shore offers stunning portrait opportunities.
Ullswater
Ullswater is the second-largest lake in the Lake District and one of the most photogenic. The steamer that crosses the lake offers a unique arrival for your ceremony, and the surrounding fells — including Helvellyn — provide a dramatic backdrop.
Castlerigg Stone Circle
Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick is one of the most atmospheric locations in the Lake District. A Neolithic stone circle set on a hilltop with 360-degree views of the fells — it is a breathtaking place for a commitment ceremony, particularly at sunrise or sunset.
Tarn Hows
Tarn Hows is a beauty spot near Coniston — a small lake surrounded by woodland and fells. It is peaceful, secluded, and utterly romantic. The flat path around the tarn makes it accessible, and the reflections on the water are stunning.
Planning your Lake District elopement
The beauty of eloping is its simplicity. Here is what I recommend:
- Choose your season. May–September offers the best weather and longest days. For fewer crowds, consider September or early October — the light is beautiful and the fells are quieter.
- Sort the legalities. For a legally binding ceremony in England, you need a licensed venue. For a commitment ceremony, you can marry anywhere — the fells, the lakeshore, a stone circle.
- Keep it simple. The joy of eloping is the lack of logistics. A beautiful dress, a bouquet, a celebrant (or just the two of you), and the landscape — that is all you need.
- Plan a portrait session. With no guests to entertain, we can spend more time on portraits. I will take you to the best locations for light and scenery, and we can hike to spots that would be impossible with a full wedding party.
Elopement photography packages
For elopements and intimate weddings, I offer tailored coverage — typically 4–6 hours rather than full unlimited coverage. This is priced accordingly, and still includes edited high-resolution images, an online gallery, and social-media-ready files.
For larger intimate weddings (20–40 guests), my standard packages apply. The Digital Only Collection at £1,500 is a popular choice — it includes unlimited coverage, drone aerials, and a USB presentation box.
